Why am I not seeing the lock and features within the Smartlocks applet? Is there a problem with the current build of Smartthings app? The lock could be remotely opened, battery assessed, but no codes or user could be changed. This lock was powered up, and easily connected to the Smartthings hub, but again, without the full feature set. The Smartthings hub is not fully/properly connecting to Current gen Z-wave locks: My next move here was to buy the latest (fully supported) Yale Assure SL lock, also a Z-wave plus device. The lock is not faulty: After several failed attempts to get these features active, excluding and reconnecting the lock each time, I changed over, and instead easily and instantly connected this lock to my Ring alarm base station, where I could access all these features. This worked insofar as I have limited control of the lock, but the smartlock app is not showing the lock, and I am unable to access any menu where I can control adding or changing users/codes to the lock. I then followed the instructions to add the lock into the network. In the app, as directed, I installed the Smartlock app. Model #BE469ZP to my existing stable Smartthings (Hub ver 3) network of switches and remotes. The correspondence and coherence metatheories use entirely different criteria to judge the truth of a particular theory and the hypotheses, statements, or claims derived from this theory. In fact, these are metatheories or frameworks, rather than theories: they are not themselves testable theories, but can be used to derive substantive theories that can be tested. In line with contemporary philosophy of science, we distinguish two major frameworks that differ in the criteria they use to decide what is true: the correspondence theory of truth (Prior 1967) and the coherence theory of truth (Rescher 2002 White 1967). Second, it enables us to develop a new view of judging diagnostic competence, and we will try to demonstrate that if we can judge diagnostic competence, we can also improve it through education or experience.Ĭorrespondence and coherence theories of truth The consequences of this approach are twofold: first, it enables us to hold different versions of truth, as a consequence of using different criteria, while refraining from philosophical speculation. Rather than speculating whether it makes sense to say that a diagnosis is “true,” it seems more fruitful to focus on the criteria we use to judge whether a diagnosis (or any other medical decision) is true in the sense: correct. Apart from indirect, this knowledge is also fallible, and hence our diagnoses are always more or less uncertain: the world in which we live is characterized by “irreducible uncertainty” (Hammond 1996b). If we hold a belief about a patient’s diagnosis, make a judgment of a patient’s state, or decide on a treatment, how do we know that this belief, judgment, or decision is “true” or “correct”? Or, even more fundamental: What do we mean by “true” when we say, “the true diagnosis was…”? Some philosophers, most notably post-structuralists, will claim there is no such thing as a “true diagnosis.” However, we believe this view to be rather unconstructive and will adopt a more pragmatic stance, i.e., that diseases are entities that exist in the empirical word (“out there”) and that we all-doctors, students, patients, teachers, anyone-can obtain at least indirect knowledge of the presence of a disease through observations-of signs, symptoms, patient behaviors, laboratory values, contextual aspects. In line with Hammond’s view (Med Decis Mak 16(3):281–287, 1996a Human judgment and social policy: irreducible uncertainty, inevitable error, unavoidable injustice, Oxford University Press, New York, 1996b), we will extend the two metatheories to two forms of competence: coherence competence and correspondence competence, and demonstrate that distinguishing these two forms of competence increases our insights as to the best way to teach undergraduate students clinical problem solving. We will discuss both the role of both metatheories in medicine, in particular in medical education in a clinical context. The two metatheories supplement each other, but are also incommensurable, i.e., they cannot be expressed in each other’s terms, for they employ completely different criteria to establish truth (Englebretsen in Bare facts and naked truths: a new correspondence theory of truth, Routledge, London, 2005). The second metatheory conceives of truth as correspondence, i.e., empirical accuracy. The first metatheory conceives of truth in terms of coherence (rationality, consistency): a body of knowledge is true when it contains no inconsistencies and has at least some credibility. In this paper, we will first discuss two current meta-theories dealing with different, aspects of “truth”. Teachers and trainers: Teachers, trainers, and other educators often create screencasts to introduce new topics and/or to give students and trainees an easy way to access step-by-step processes. You’ve probably watched a few of these when you used YouTube to search for things like “how to edit cool videos” or “how to make a green screen video.” YouTube how-to videos: YouTubers have been creating and sharing helpful screencasts with step-by-step how-to instructions for years. Gaming tutorials: Gamers often create screencasts when they’ve completed a particularly difficult challenge, when they want to show a trick for beating a hard boss, or when they find a cool easter egg in a game. A few of the top purposes for screencasts include: And a lot of different people can benefit from creating and sharing screencasts – both professionally and recreationally. That said, these tutorials can vary a great deal. Most people use screencasts to create video tutorials that give people a walkthrough and step-by-step process for a specific action or goal. For example, a screencast can include text, video-in-video or image-in-video features, images, audio and voiceovers, and/or mouse movements. But screencasts can also include a lot of different details and objects. So, at its simplest, a recording of a video conference could be considered a screencast. A screencast is a recorded video that captures and displays what’s happening on a screen. That’s why we’ve put together this article: to help you understand the ins and outs of screencasting, so you can choose the best screen-recording software and make a screencast that looks and sounds great.īefore we get into how to make a screencast, though, we need to cover what a screencast is and why you should care. However, for a screencast to be successful – something that your audience wants to watch – you’ll need to address a few more details. Here are 3 easy steps to make a screencast:Ĭreating a screencast sounds pretty simple, right? It is! And, with the information in this article, you can do it in just a few steps. The takeaway technique will vary, again, based on the variables in the attack and what has occurred up to this point. If you are in a position where you are controlling the weapon and attacking as in the previous phase of the defense progression you will be set-up for an opportunity to take the knife away. If the knife drops to the ground, kick it far away from your location if possible. Takeaway – You want to get that knife away from the attacker if possible. This is where you really have to take over the fight and give yourself a chance to get away with aggression and the “don’t quit” mentality that Krav Maga Worldwide self-defense training instills. A front kick to the groin can be very effective here but, again, depending on the range you are in, the position you are in at that range, and how the attack occurred, other strikes and combative can be employed. This is crucial in overall self-defense and it’s something that everyone should know.Īttack – Once you have some sort of control of the weapon, you have to make damage to the attacker to the extent that they cannot continue to fight. Utilizing the concept of “base and space” will prevent you from being taken to the ground or moved and it will give you the chance to fight back and get away if an attacker gets close enough to you to wrap you in a bearhug. Once you have some space from their hips, continue striking and fighting back (use that front kick to the groin) until you can get away. Dropping your weight into your base might create enough distance from the attacker’s hips but if not, start striking at their groin to get their hips away from you. They get close and get their hips underneath it. Think about it, nobody lifts something heavy from a position in which their hips are super far away from the object. If the attacker has wrapped you in a bearhug and their hips are close to you, there is a better chance that they can lift you. Specifically you need to get their hips away from your body and create “space” for yourself so you can fight back. You have to create space from the attacker in any way you can. The striking surface for a kick to the goin is going to be the top of your foot (where your shoelaces would be) or any part of your shin.įrom here you can start to fight back. When delivering the kick you want to keep your foot flat and wide, not pointed up to the ceiling or sky. Imagine the kick going straight up an opponent’s body, essentially from their groin to the top of their head. Once you get a good feel for this initial part of the kicking motion, instead of keeping your knee bent you simply let your leg unfold up and through (foot traveling south to north) to deliver the kick. A kick is a longer range strike so you want it to extend out away from you body. A good way to think about getting this movement right is to drive your knee forward by driving your bellybutton and hips forward while your head and shoulders (counterbalancing your lower body) rock slightly back. Your leg should look like a triangle or an arrowhead driving forward with your lower leg still folded back at the beginning of the kicking movement. To deliver an effective kick to the groin, start by driving one knee forward straight out in front of your body. That seems to have changed quietly, according to a user on reddit. Do not exceed this time or else the candy will start to harden and you might have a hard time transferring it to the candy molds. If in case you missed the 10-minute mark and the syrup has started to harden, you can fix it by adding a little bit of water and re-boiling the mixture. Pour the syrup into a bowl and cool for 10 minutes. This should take no more than 30 minutes. When the maple syrup starts to boil, put in the candy thermometer and wait for the temperature to reach 235 degrees Fahrenheit (or 113 degrees Celcius). In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, bring the maple syrup and oil to a boil over medium heat.Spray it with cooking spray to prevent the candy from sticking when it cools. Prepare the candy mold before heating the maple syrup. This is probably one of the simplest hard candies you can make. Other than that, there’s nothing else you’ll really need. The only thing I recommend that you really use in making this hard candy is a candy thermometer. If not, you can just pour the candy mixture onto a baking sheet and crack it into pieces when it’s cool and hard. But really, you can skip this part and just use maple syrup without using any other ingredient. Or, you can simply add a few drops of oil to the maple syrup. You can either dip the back of a spoon in vegetable oil and run it over the foam to reduce it. There are two different things you can do this. Some people use a little bit of oil to keep the maple syrup from foaming too much. Making maple syrup hard candies is directly heating the syrup in the pan. How to Make Maple Syrup Hard CandyĪs I mentioned, we’ve made several hard candies on this page and they all had similar processes of caramelizing sugar.īut this time, we are going to make the hard candy using another process. You’ll surely appreciate how easy and fast it is to make. I’m so excited to show you how to make hard candy out of maple syrup. You may or may not use any candy molds for this. Nevertheless, it’s so easy to make and you won’t be needing many kitchen tools, as well.Īs for me, my friend sent me some maple leaf candy molds of different kinds, so I’m going to use them to give my candies an authentic feel. However, those recipes require melting granulated sugar, which we won’t be needing in this recipe.Īll we need is some maple syrup and a little bit of oil, nothing else! Well, the oil is optional, but there’s a bit of science in adding a little bit. I’ve done a few posts about hard candies, so you probably know by now that hard candies are easy to make. So what better way to use it than make more maple candies? And since hard candies are the kids’ top choice, then hard candy it is. The kids usually love it for pancakes, waffles, french toast, ice cream, and even bacon.īut a drizzle here and there would still leave us a few bottles of maple syrup. The maple syrup, we usually use for different treats. In less than two weeks, most of the candies are wiped out – every single time. Now going back to maple candies and syrups, LOL. I have a microwave peanut brittle recipe and a corn syrup-free stovetop version you might want to try. I mostly like the creamy and nutty ones – because I love peanut brittle, remember? If you haven’t read my two peanut brittle recipes, please check them out as well. The maple candies are always a hit with the kids. And guess what they send me? Yes, maple candies and syrup!!! I send them something from my hometown, they send me treats from theirs. And I got to bring home loads of ‘em and some pure maple syrup, too!Įvery now and then, my friends and I would exchange treats from miles apart. There were some that are creamy, some with nuts, others were made into hard candy. I got to taste several different kinds of maple candy treats there. What a sweet way to gather people – literally! I found out later that this activity is somewhat being done across the region for the maple festival. One of the bakers I met invited me to a small event where they put tin buckets on the trunk of maple trees to gather the sap which they later use for the maple sugar and eventually make some into candies. It’s not something that we have where I’m from so it’s something I find interesting. The timing was so right for a maple festival, where people make maple sugar and candies. I met a lot of people and gained some friends. I traveled to New England several years ago for a baking conference.
